The issue of downtown outdoor entertainment is at a fever pitch, as the “People for Park Entertainment” petition (ipetitions.com/petition/peopleforparks) surpasses 800 signatures and social media-armed activists urge supporters to attend this Wednesday’s rescheduled Special City Commission Meeting discussing the future of downtown events. The heated debate was sparked by suspicions that a small group of residents were granted the meeting after voicing concerns about the Harvey Milk Festival held in Five Points Park on May 12. The online conversation has been laden with negative stereotypes regarding age, class and social hierarchy.

And yet this Saturday, directly between City Hall and the park at the center of controversy, there will be an all-night, all-ages, all-local original music festival featuring artists of every age group, professional level and genre, from classical straight through to metal. In a city at war over noise, three days prior to the biggest showdown in years, comes an event in absolute physical and spiritual contrast to everything the “Special Meeting” has come to represent. Thus is the perpetual paradox that is Sarasota.

The all-too-suitably named Joyful Noise Music Festival will immerse Lemon Avenue in sea of positive vibes, pushing a message of hope, inclusion, and how the power of music bridges all divides. Benefiting Second Chance-Last Opportunity, a local charity offering life skills courses to at-risk youth, the event aims to encourage all people to strive for greatness by highlighting the importance of following their dreams. Event Producer Suzette Jones sought to tie this destiny fulfilling theme into every aspect of the festival, starting with the performers.

“The music reflects (SCLO’s) mission of taking a dream and making it real, so the talent was by invitation only,” Jones says. “We started an online contest but it didn’t get legs, so we’re kicking it off at the festival and we’re going to extend it all summer. The contest is for people that have a vision for themselves and we want to get them to the next step.”

Chris Eisenberg

Sharing the stage will be a diversity of talent spanning the full spectrum from 10-year-old tween-pop princess Canyon to 13-season Oakland Raiders lineman Henry Lawrence, from renowned classical soprano Johanna Fincher to gritty industrial project Team Cybergeist, and from the eclectic “mood design” of Michael McPherson (formerly DJ M-Squared) to the country twang of 12-year-old Skylah Mello. The uplifting Christian gospel of Greatness Beyond Measure will meet the secularly honest and introspective indie-folk of Completely From Mountains. And the veteran skill of longtime studio multi-instrumentalist John Derick will align with the new-found glory of rising “America’s Got Talent” teen hip-hop star Chris Eisenberg (aka Lil’ Chris). Next Level Nation founder and hip-hop motivator E-MAN (Emmanuel Avraham), as well as yours truly, top off one of the most stylistically varied local bills I’ve ever encountered.

We can only hope that the positive energy emitted by Joyful Noise’s all-embracing, dream-chasing attitude lingers around downtown a few extra days. If so, we just might find some common ground.

Twinkle embraces her hometown

Music

The singer-songwriter feels right at home at Eat Here Sarasota.... Read more »

Twinkle performs every Friday night at Eat Here Sarasota. (STAFF PHOTO / THOMAS BENDER)

Twinkle is done reaching out into the big world. She’s ready to stay home.

Since she was a little girl, Twinkle Schaschle Ursula Yochim has wanted to live elsewhere and pursue her dreams. Some dreams have come true, some have not. Through it all, her passion for music has never wavered.

“I’m exhausted out in the big industry world. It’s not the same one I entered into when I was younger,” Twinkle said.

At 46, she’s about to become a first-time grandmother. She wants to be there for her daughter and grandchild. Again, she’s ready to stay home.

“I want to write my songs, play them in front of people like I’ve been doing since I was 15 years old, and I want to work with the people I love and no drama. I love my family, my friends and my hometown. Oh, my god, I love my hometown.”

That’s why she jumped at the chance for a regular gig — a “residency,” if you will — at Eat Here Sarasota. Every Friday, from 8:30 to 11 p.m., her and her band mates — brother Tony LeClerc (bass), guitarist Lenny Brooks, drummer Troy Parrish and backup vocalist Alison Pollack — set up shop at the rooftop bar.

It’s a freewheeling affair — some original material, some cover versions. Never the same set.

It’s a refreshing change from a difficult past year for the soulful singer. Her father died, as did several other relatives. “It was like a domino effect,” she said.

“And then I got a DUI the day that my uncle died,” she said. “What it did for me is, I’ve embraced the program (Alcoholics Anonymous). To me, the program is peeling off the resentments and the past and you get back to who you are.”

And she knows she doesn’t want to be that person sitting in a jail again.

“Believe me, it was sobering sitting in there with girls half my age. I felt so sorry for them. When they found out who I was, they asked me to sing them to sleep, so I sang them ‘Redemption Song.’”

For now, she’s embracing her time at Eat Here, which she calls a “family atmosphere. This really feels like home.”
She’s working on material for a new album and hopes to start recording this summer. Her former manager, Nick Miller, will produce it.

“This is the album I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “And these songs are all originals.”

This Friday (May 25), instead of playing on the rooftop bar, Twinkle and band will perform at 6 p.m. at the fountain outside the restaurant; proceeds from the show will go to the American Cancer Society and “Little Hearts.”

This, Bud, is for you

Home

Music

Nightlife

This Weekend

Musicians rally around producer and Spirit Ranch Studio owner Bud Snyder with a benefit concert Sunday (May 27).... Read more »

Bud Snyder, right, in the Spirit Ranch Studio with songwriter Ed Klopfer. Upon hearing the news two months ago, his friends and colleagues organized “Sarasota Blues & Brews” — a benefit that is swooping in on Sunday (May 27) at the Cock & Bull to raise funds for Snyder’s emergency surgery.

“I’m so thankful to be part of this community, and the fact that so many people have come together to help me has been completely overwhelming,” says Snyder, who co-founded the Spirit Ranch Studio in Sarasota, which continues to record albums for global artists. “The musicians in this town have always stepped forward to help people; they never hesitate.”

Snyder has worked with the likes of the Allman Brothers Band, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Buckley.

Dana Lawrence, singer and rhythm guitarist for Kettle of Fish, certainly hasn’t. With the aid of Barbara Strauss, Jack Sullivan, Tammy Merrell and Greg Herndon, Lawrence has recruited a lineup of blues acts for a 10-hour revue to rock two outdoor stages at the Sarasota venue this weekend.

“Every time I brought up Bud’s name to anyone, Gov’t Mule or the Allman Brothers, and told them he was sick, they immediately wanted to help,” Lawrence says. “It’s a life well lived to have that kind of attention and respect from the music community.”

Snyder’s fundraiser will transpire come rain or shine (though there is a 60 percent chance of rain, Lawrence says), and all proceeds will go straight to Snyder. The Cock & Bull, which is revered for its microbrews and imports, will be quenching the crowd’s thirst, of course.

Headlining is Berry Oakley’s Jive-Ass Revue: with the Rowdy Roadies and the Shady Ladies, featuring members of Dickey Betts & Great Southern. Among the other talent are The Toler-Tucci Band (including Dan Toler of the Allman Brothers Band), Kettle of Fish, Twinkle, Soundwall Jackson, Fogt’s All-Stars, Buddy Gibson, Lauren Mitchell, Tony Tyler, Mike Tozier, the Selwyn Birchwood Band and the RJ Howson Band.

“Every artist playing this show, I’ve worked with,” Snyder says. “They’re all wonderful.”

Snyder has four decades of studio experience to his name, having worked with Jeff Buckley, Edwin McCain, Warren Haynes, John Popper, Gumbi Ortiz, Leon Poindexter, Chuck Leavell, Oteil Burbridge, Derek Trucks, Jimmie Fadden and Jimmy Herring. He has handled nearly every element of music making – inside the sound booths and on the tour buses — from the United States to Europe and Japan. Snyder was an audio engineer and production manager for the Allman Brothers Band from 1980 to 2001. He was also involved in five Grammy Award-nominated records and one winner.

Snyder is currently recording Canada’s Diana Catherine and the Thrusty Tweeters, and Sarasota bands Come Back Alice and Kettle of Fish, at the Spirit Ranch.

His health issues sneaked up on him this year, however, when he suffered from a kidney stone, he says. During routine testing, his radiologist randomly discovered an aneurism, even though there were (and are) no apparent symptoms.

“If I don’t have the aneurism operated on, it will burst. If they hadn’t done the test, I might have made it two or four years, but one day, I would just have been walking and died from internal bleeding,” Snyder says. “I’m one of those people who, for a majority of my life, has had health insurance, but the last few years, I haven’t been able to afford it.”

Surgery runs from $25,000 to $60,000, Snyder says. As soon as he procures the amount, he will schedule the operation.

To generate extra cash, “Sarasota Blues & Brews” will feature a silent auction with a guitar signed by Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, vinyl records signed by Betts, and assorted items signed by members of the Allman Brothers Band, Hot Tuna, Matt Abts, the Marshall Tucker Band, the Outlaws, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill

“It’s been a really event easy to organize, due to the love and respect for Bud,” Lawrence says. “He’s just a real, honest, loving guy. I’ve never shook his hand; it’s always been a hug. That warmth and honesty is very seldom the case in the music industry. He’s just special.”

Pete Arevalo, who runs the Spirit Ranch with Snyder, shares Lawrence’s endearment.

“I don’t think these musicians could be doing this for a nicer person or someone who has given more to the community than Bud,” Arevalo says. “He has changed lives.”

This weekend, Sarasota will change his.

Soundboard live music calendar, May 24-30

Home

Music

Nightlife

Now Playing - Music

Soundboard

This Weekend

This week's comprehensive calendar, plus our picks for best shows.... Read more »

Thursday, May 24

Union Productions presents RERUB feat. Dance music spanning the spectrum of electro, dubstep, breaks, glitch and moombah will hit the airwaves, cut with copious quantities heavy bass frequencies. Signed with Drop the World Records, widely travelled high velocity DJ/Producer Curtis B has earned several rankings on Beatport’s Top 100 Breaks, Dubstep, Glitch Hop & Electro House charts, and has had his tracks dropped by some of the biggest names in electronic dance music. NYC’s KillNM, who will serve as MC for the evening, recently reunited with B to release his debut single “Step Back”, which quickly shot to #2 on Beatport’s Top 10 Breaks. Preparing for the release of their debut EP in June, The Wallies combine ’60s mod and Brit-rock with gritty riffs and tightly timed breaks to produce adrenaline -infused tunes in the vein of Arctic Monkeys. They will be accompanied on Thursday by the psych-rock-folk-shock collegiate sound collage known as Physical Plant, as well as the heady yet highly assessable garage-rock hybrid quintet (the) Umbrella Cult, providing a diverse sampling of the overall SRQ soundscape. The party continues on Friday as tragically impassioned folk-rock princess Geri X takes the Skyway down from Pinellas to join two of Sarasota’s repurposed projects. She will be hocking copies of her brand spanking new release “Work is the Wolf”, which she unveiled at a St. Pete CD release gig just last Saturday. Known for years as the ambient, echoey solo project of front man David Daly, Completely From Mountains completed its full band transformation last year, and the reinvigorated Sarasota trio will soon unveil the fruits of its reincarnation with the release of a full-length debut in just a matter of weeks. Rounding things off will be solidly indie-folk-pop trio O’Captain, who offer up an organic earthy delivery with slight hints of vintage rock and Americana scattered throughout.

Saturday, May 26

The Return of DJ Sinna-G w/ DJ Goran N. / DJ Simplisstick
9 p.m., Prana Lounge, 1118 N. She was one of the most active DJs in the Suncoast scene throughout her time in Sarasota from 2000 up until last year, when she decided to gain a little more altitude and make the move out to Denver. Technically, Sinna-G specializes in Vocal House, Top 40 Remixes/Mash-Ups, Progressive House, Soulful House, Deep House, Lounge and Electro, but anyone familiar with her spins knows she’ll stray just about anywhere the energy takes her, as she weaves through vast expanses of sonic experimentation. That’s why for the second round of their monthly “Marquee Saturday Series” at Prana, Behind the Beat Promotions and Plush Entertainment have decided to fly Sinna-G back to town for one night only. And anyone who knows her personally will also agree that she’s one of the sweetest, big-hearted human beings on the face of the planet.

ALSO PLAYING THIS WEEK
(Shows are listed chronologically and alphabetically; some showtimes are unavailable.)

THURSDAY 5.24
Gulf Coast Banjo Society, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. every Thurs.

Growlers Pub: Wallies/Physical Plant/Umbrella Cult and Geri X/Completely From Mountains/O’Captain

Music

Now Playing - Music

This Weekend

Two days of spectacular music.... Read more »

Growlers Pub, 2831 N.

The Local Original: The battle over noise

Blog

Featured

Home

In Print

Music

Section

The Local Original

The war continues to rage over outdoor nighttime entertainment and condo dwelling.... Read more »

“People for Park Entertainment” Petition: ipetitions.com/petition/peopleforparks

The residents of Sarasota have been engaged in a civil war for over two decades regarding the issue of outdoor nighttime entertainment. The dispute is an inherent result of numerous area bars operating in close proximity to condo buildings. The battle seemed to subside over the past two years, mostly due to the economic slowdown. But with this season’s record-breaking Siesta Key tourism numbers, and the nearly 5,000 people who gathered in Selby Five Points Park for May 12′s Harvey Milk Festival, the fight has suddenly roared back to life on all fronts.

The Five Points area has been the literal heart of downtown Sarasota since the 1940s. The public park that now sits between Pineapple and Central was officially dedicated on Sunday, Jan. 20, 1991, as part of an Arts Day celebration that included 15 art galleries and 25 performing groups. “Downtown is being reborn,” then City Manager David Sollenberger told the Herald-Tribune following the event. “This park is going to be a magnet for the downtown area,” added then City Commissioner Jack Gurney. “There will be art shows and concerts and other events here regularly.”

Of course, that was before the park was cast into the dark shadows of condominium towers — prior to the current political climate where money and influence trump art and community every time. A prime example is the “Special Meeting” that City Commissioners agreed to hold this Thursday (May 24), after fielding complaints from downtown condo owners following the HMF concert in Five Points.

Upon learning of the hastily scheduled meeting, local writer and HMF co-producer Anthony Paull posted a callout on ThisWeekInSarasota.com urging citizens to attend. As of Monday, the piece had racked up 550 Facebook “Likes,” and an online petition called “People for Park Entertainment” (also launched by TWIS) had garnered nearly 600 signatures. But the kicker is a YouTube video that was posted by user Citizen Kane on May 20 titled “Five Points Park (behind the scenes of Condo Assoc. Meeting)”. The clip shows an enraged Hitler in a scene from the German film “Downfall,” only the subtitles have been replaced with rants about bench removal, sidewalk chalk, roundabouts, bums and noise. It’s up to about 1,400 views. The commission’s “Special Meeting” has since been canceled.

Noise complaints on Siesta Key have also increased in recent weeks, seemingly ignited by an April 13 email from Village condo owner Mike Ashley to Siesta Key Association Vice President Peter Van Roekens. “I called in yet another noise complaint about Siesta Key Oyster Bar tonight,” writes Ashley. “At 11:30 I personally observed that they still had a live band playing.” That’s probably because SKOB’s live music cut-off time is midnight on Fridays. But that didn’t stop Van Roekens from forwarding the letter to SKA President Catherine Luckner, who immediately copied County Commissioner Nora Patterson on the exchange.

Van Roekens and Patterson have been allies in the Siesta noise war for a decade. Back then, as president of the Terrace East Condo Association, Van Roekens worked closely with Patterson to implement the original Village noise restrictions. Unlike sound laws in most cities, it was actually Van Roekens’ idea to take decibel readings at the venue, rather than the place of complaint. “Nora Patterson was the one who started to see there was a problem,” he recalled in a 2009 interview. “If you measure at the receiving point everybody points fingers, so I had it changed to the generating property line.”

Obviously, Van Roekens has enough pull with the commissioners to single-handedly influence our county laws. That’s probably why word of his latest noise crackdown spread so quickly. Within days, complaints alleging everything from underage drinking to “sinister arrangements” with the police were filed by Donald Kruse and Timothy Haake of Terrace East and Joe Volpe of Treasure Boat Way. Volpe, who now serves as publicity chair for SKA, is a longtime local anti-noise advocate. Kruse and Haake, on the other hand, just moved to Siesta earlier this year. Apparently, they didn’t notice the nine bars directly below their balcony before purchasing their condos. Luckily, they have friends in high places.

A video tribute to the Queen of Disco

Featured

Home

Music

Music News

Nightlife

Photo Galleries

Section

From "Love to Love You Baby" to "This Time I Know It's For Real."... Read more »

Long live the Queen of Disco.

The Associated Press reported that Donna Summer has died of cancer at age 63. Her family issued a statement Thursday saying that they “are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continue legacy.”

In the late 1970s, there wasn’t a bigger female name in music. From 1978 to 1980, she had eight straight Top 10 hits — including four No. 1s: “MacArthur Park,” “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls” and “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough),” the latter of which was a duet with Barbra Streisand.

After disco waned in the early 1980s and Summer’s hits dried up, she found new life in the MTV era, scoring one of her most memorable songs: 1983′s “She Works Hard for the Money,” an anthem for women the world over. Her last big hit was 1989′s “This Time I Know It’s For Real.”

‘From Gershwin to GALA’

Home

Music

Nightlife

Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota marks its 15th year with its spring concert Saturday night.... Read more »

Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota celebrates its 15th anniversary with music “From Gershwin to GALA” at 8 p.m. Saturday (May 19) at Holley Hall, 709 N.
